Reinhoud d’Haese
GALLERY

Reinhoud d’Haese was born in Grammont, Belgium in 1928.

Initially, he wished to become a goldsmith, and, in fact, he studied from 1947 to 1951 at the École d’Architecture et des Arts Decoratifs in Brussels.

However, he soon abandoned this road to follow that of sculpture and, as such, created surreal works that permitted him, thanks to the help of his friend Pierre Alechinsky, to become part of the COBRA group with which he exhibited subsequently on numerous occasions.

In 1958 – when the COBRA movement had already been disbanded for some time – he finally decided to continue his research independently.  From that moment on, he used varied materials like  metals, pewter and glass,  producing a large “family” of mysterious and amusing beings, like characters from children’s fairy tales, perfectly in tune with the language of the COBRA group.

Generally these figures – small-scale sculptures – were displayed in groups, performing human activities.

Reinhoud d’Haese died in Paris in 2007.

Some of the museums in which his works have been exhibited at: the Maison de la Culture in Namur, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and the PMMK- Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.
